Fajara Skills Centre has provided inspiration to those who have enrolled by
building confidence and transforming attitudes of young women. FSD has been able
to impact knowledge and provide skills to empower its students and trainees. It
has given them a new image of themselves encouraged a sense of self-worthiness
and prepared them for their individual contribution in the society. It has
actually trained well over 500 students to date who have either been employed in
public and private institutions or are engaged in their own commercial ventures
and small scale enterprises e.g. Corinthia Hotel Salon, Hair Nest and African
Pride Salon just to name a few.
Home Economics
This involves hygienic preparation of food with an underpinning knowledge of
healthy cooking, the service industry and focusing on food preservation in
general. We shall be teaching students here to manage a home when appropriate.
This would entail how to cobweb, clean and basic house keeping. This program is
designed to get the trainee to be aware of the hazards of poor storage of food
and the tips of cooking local food and baking.
Fine Art
The Centre offers a course in Fine Art. This entails
batik, tie and dye, painting, lettering and design. Though we are in the
hairdressing and beauty business, the students have an option of taking up other
skills when they finish. By giving them a broader view for job spectrum,
(hairdressing and beauty entails capital) when they finish. They do not become
redundant while waiting to start up their chosen career
Science
Students need background knowledge on basic hygiene, health, safety and
nutrition. They will also be given some knowledge on sexually transmitted
diseases.
Commerce
This is a quite vital area of understanding if they go into any business. They
have to know if they are running at a loss or profit, how to raise capital to
start a business and how to make a business plan. As would-be-entrepreneurs,
students should know their duties and responsibilities to their customers.
French
This is a simple communication skill. West Africa is divided into English and
French speaking countries . If students should find themselves in Senegal, for
instance, language should not be a barrier.
Sewing

This course has been introduced to equip students with garment making skills.
The emphasis will be on free-hand cutting.
Computers
Computer studies will be introduced in time. Students would go through basic
secretarial course and learn typing.
